West Africa Division of IOSH – The Journey So Far

West Africa Division of IOSH – The Journey So Far – West Africa has become a formal branch of IOSH and it is a hugely significant development in occupational safety and health (OSH) in our region, which will help with our growth and our partnerships locally.

The West Africa Branch has four districts: Ghana, North Central, South South, and South West. The Ghana District sits in Ghana, while the North Central, South South, and South West districts are based in Nigeria.

IOSH West Africa Branch has undergone various stages in the journey to formal Branch status. It started as an informal network group in Nigeria through the initiative of Kayode Fowode in 2015. It gained official recognition by IOSH on 13 November 2020 when it was officially launched as the IOSH West Africa Division, consisting of four regions, with Dapo Omolade as the pioneering Chair of the Division.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts of both past and current committees who have actively participated throughout the course of the journey to formal Branch status, especially the guidance and support received from the IOSH Council members based in West Africa.

To our 250-plus members, who have been loyal to the Branch by participating in and attending our activities, I thank you.

The Branch either uses face-to-face or virtual mediums to hold monthly CPD sessions, which align with the IOSH strategy Activate 2028 and the IOSH competency framework. Both the presentation slides and the recordings of events can be viewed on the West Africa web page and via LinkedIn.

The Branch is open to working collaboratively with OSH professional bodies, allied bodies and government agencies under the umbrella of the IOSH strategy Activate 2028, which brings to the forefront the role OSH plays in enabling inclusive working environments where employees feeling safe and being safe are given equal attention and action.

Whatever your background, wherever you are in your health and safety career, or whatever industry sector you are working in, you will find a warm welcome at our events and all our Branch activities.
