OSHA Issuing Final Rule on PPE in the Construction Industry

The National Safety Council has commended the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for completing a necessary and reasonable new rule that guarantees construction workers receive appropriately fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) at their workplace.

“For too long, workers have endured an unnecessary hazard on the job site – PPE that doesn’t fit and therefore makes them less safe,” said Lorraine Martin, President and CEO. “NSC is pleased to see this common-sense, lifesaving measure become final. OSHA’s leadership ensures more workers will get home safe and sound at the end of their day.”

Every day, construction workers in the US encounter possible risks at their job sites. PPE is one of the last tools to prevent workers from getting hurt or killed while performing duties when a hazard cannot be removed, replaced, or engineered. Gloves and safety helmets are examples of properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) that can protect workers from major injuries brought on by heat, chemical spills, and falling items.

OSHA has developed a regulation that would safeguard workers without placing an undue burden on small companies. This regulation was developed through a collaborative approach that involved industry stakeholders, the Small Business Administration, the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health, and safety advocates.

NSC looks forward to working with OSHA to offer educational materials and resources about the final rule to our members and partners in the construction industry dedicated to safety.
