What Is an Occupational Health And Safety Degree
An Occupational Health and Safety Degree is a degree awarded at the completion of the Occupational Health and Safety course. Occupational Health and Safety is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety, health, and welfare of people at work.
When we talk about the Occupational Health and Safety Degree, it covers a wide range of programs under the Occupational Health and Safety field.
Occupational Health And Safety Degree Requirements For Admission
I will split the requirements using some country’s institutions:
1. Nigeria – University of Portharcourt
Course: Occupational Health and Safety
PGD Admission: For admission into PGD, Candidates who possess a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) less than 3.00 out of 5.00 will be considered. Also, candidates who possess a Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognized Polytechnic or Institute will be considered
2. Australia – University of Newcastle Sydney Campus
Course: Bachelor of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety
Admission Requirement: The degree is available to applicants who have successfully completed the following:
- Diploma in Health, Science, or Engineering from a local Polytechnic or other recognized institution;
- Diploma in Industrial Engineering from PSB Academy; OR
- Other Diploma or equivalent qualifications would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Note that, in order to be considered for admission, all previous qualifications must have been completed within eight years prior to lodging an admission application. Applicants with qualifications that are over eight years old or with other relevant diploma qualifications may also apply but will be required to submit a detailed resume outlining work experience and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by The University.
All applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirements. 3. United States – Murray State University
Course: Occupational Safety and Health Bachelor of Science Degree
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the Murray State University requirements (refer to Murray State Academic Bulletin). Students may declare OSH as their area of choice at any point. However, students must be formally admitted into the OSH program before they can enroll in restricted classes which are OSH 353 and 400- (excluding 412 and 488) and 500-level OSH classes. In order to be admitted to the OSH program, a student must:
(1) have completed at least 30 credit hours of coursework directly applicable to an OSH degree from the OSH University Studies requirements, required core courses, non-restricted OSH classes at the 100-, 200- and 300-levels, and Technical Electives, with a minimum GPA of 2.50;
(2) have no grade less than a C in an OSH class;
(3) complete an application packet for admission to the program;
(4) be successfully reviewed by the OSH program admissions committee;
(5) apply by February 1 for summer/fall enrollment or by September 1 for spring enrollment;
(6) follow the most current bulletin when admitted to the program. Admission is competitive and based on available space. Admission is subject to application and careful evaluation by the OSH program admissions committee.
4. Canada – Ryerson University, Toronto
Course: Occupational Health and Safety
Academic Requirements for Full-Time, Four-Year Program
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses including the following program-specific requirements.
Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission consideration; subject to competition individual programs may require higher pre-requisite grades and/or higher overall averages:
- English/Anglais (ENG4U/EAE4U preferred)
- One of: Chemistry (SCH4U) or Biology (SBI4U)
- The minimum grade(s) required in the subject prerequisites (normally in the 60-70% range) will be determined subject to competition.
Note: Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university will not be considered for admission to the four-year degree program.

Requirements for Occupational Health and Safety Two-Year Program for University Graduates
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university including three (lower or upper level) liberal studies courses.
- Applicants must have as part of their degree (or other post-secondary education) credit for at least one single-term course in chemistry (equivalent to CHY 104).
- Successful candidates may apply for up to six single-term transfer credits based on their previous university studies.
Requirements for Occupational Health and Safety Two-Year Diploma to Degree Pathway
- Completion of the Workplace Safety and Prevention Diploma from Lambton College, Seneca College or Cambrian College with a minimum B/3.0/70% overall average.
5. Canada – Newfoundland and Labrador’s University
Course: Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MOHS)
Minimum admission requirements: Second-class Bachelor’s degree in an area of study relevant to occupational health and safety, or in medicine, nursing, occupational/physical therapy, two letters of reference, and, for applicants whose prior university instruction was not in English, demonstration of English language proficiency. Minimum TOEFL scores are 580 for the paper-based test; 237 on the computer-based test; and 92 on the Internet-based test. The minimum IELTS score is an overall band score of 7.0.
Consideration is also given to applicants without a post-secondary degree who have more than 10 years of work experience in occupational health and safety.
6. UK – University of Birmingham
Course: Health, Safety and Environment Management MSc/Diploma
Entry Requirement: Entry to the courses requires a 2:1 Honours degree in a relevant discipline.
International Students – English language requirements
Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS: 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band)
IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band is equivalent to:
- TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking and 19 in Writing
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 51 in all four skills
- Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component

1. National Institute of Fire Engineering and Safety Management:
Like other Graduation courses, this is also a Graduate degree course in Health Safety & Environment which helps in a bright career in the Fire & Safety fields. This is a Three years course But a candidate can take admission directly in 2nd year (1ST Year will be Exempted) having 6 papers per year and the examination will be once a year.
The minimum Qualification to be admitted in this course is 10th, Intermediate ( Any Stream ) / ITI ( 2 yrs) / Diploma 3 Yrs. and DFS/ DHSE from a recognized University. Every Year Examination will be held in the Month of May.
Each Paper contains 100 marks and the Pass mark is 40 out of 100.
