ALERT: Sunburns can result to skin cancer

*If you have sunburns once every 2 years, it can triple your risk of developing melanoma skin cancer*.

I saw this tweet in the HSE executive twitter handle.

It is a worthy awareness to the seriousness of the danger of sunburns.

Do you wish to avoid skin cancer caused by sunburns, then the way out is eliminating or reducing exposure to sun rays.

Are you an out-door worker? Like people in the construction firms and the likes?

Have you picked an hobby that gets you exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun too often?,

If your answer is yes, then you are at risk of developing skin cancer because of excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun.

To prevent development of skin cancer caused by sun exposure, three (3) strategies has been recommended:

PREVENTING SKIN CANCER FROM SUNBURNS

  1. Use shade when possible: This has to do with job planning. Some job can be done using a shade before taken outside. Under high sun rays, consider the safe way to complete the task without excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Use available shade or create one if possible.

  1. Use protective clothing: Protective clothing is recommended during high sun rays. When there is no possibility that a task can be completed under a shade, protective clothing should be considered. Fully covered clothing is recommended, covering from the neck region all down. The clothing should be a light coloured long sleeves clothing. Long sleeves and fully covered pants are a physical barrier between your skin and the sun and protect by absorbing or blocking ultraviolet radiation, before it can even reach the skin. Choose clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and remember to use sunscreen on any spots that aren’t covered. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses too for added protection.

  1. Use sun-cream: Sun-cream, also known as Sun-screen or sun-block, is a lotion, spray, gel or other topical product that absorbs or reflects some of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and thus helps protect against sunburn, especially for fair-skinned individuals.
