The incumbent will be responsible for implementing and managing SUEZ environment, health and safety (EHS), and industrial risk programs in the assigned region. This includes monitoring, verifying, and strengthening compliance with EHS regulations and taking action where necessary, advising on safe work methods and practices, and facilitating incident analysis & reviews. Incumbent is expected to work in coordination with operations team to ensure implementation of corporate EHS policies & programs at the region and the project level and support compliance with safe drinking water act and clean water act. Field presence is an essential component of responsibilities for the purposes of oversight, technical support, and coordination of all EHS program implementation.

Direct/Indirect Reports: None

Budget Accountabilities: Provides input for EH&S related expenses to the Project/Region Managers.

Reports directly to EHS Director and indirectly to VP of Operations

Nature & Scope-Principal Areas of Responsibilities:

Human & Organization Performance: Conduct field visits with an objective of human performance observations (i.e. job-shadow critical tasks/work processes from beginning to end identifying deviations); facilitate risk assessment, “pre-accident investigations” and “post job reviews”.

Conduct field review of high risk task for Severe Potential Injuries & Fatality (SIF) preventions. Works with supervisors and senior management to recognize and overcome organization limitations in order to improve environmental and safety performance (15% of the time)

Incident Prevention & Management: Facilitate post-accident learning meetings (accident analysis) and institute controls based on analysis & seasonal/specific risks. Facilitate incident management including injury intervention & return to work processes.

Works with local and regional organization to bring consistent improvement (15% of the time)

EHS Performance Reviews: Conduct Region and Project Specific EHS assessment & reviews including EHS audits, due diligence, work-site inspections, goal and program setting with site and regional managers. (10% of the time)

Environmental Duties: Assist with environmental compliance processes, risk assessment, and development and implementation of preventive measures. This includes compliance with safe drinking water act, clean water act, NPDES project permit, and bioslids disposal regulations. Works with local and regional organization to bring consistent improvement. (15% of the time).

Project Support: Provide on-site EHS support to facilitate behavioral changes, risk reductions, and compliance with EHS regulations and policies. Supports implementation of EHS programs thru observations and coaching for improved behaviors. Supports contractor safety management by supporting EHS orientation, EHS performance evaluation, and field observations (10% of the time)

Corporate Initiatives: Support implementation of SUEZ initiatives including contract deliverables, fair culture assessments, traffic/vehicle safety, and health initiatives etc. (5% of the time)

Training: Coordinates specialized EHS training (confined space, LOTO, arc flash, trenching/ excavation, rigging/crane operation, work zone fafety, ); train/certify internal EHS trainers; assess and authorize external trainer; and facilitate competence certification process (10% of the time).

Travel time, administrative tasks, reporting, networking, professional development (20% of the time)

Willingness and ability to work in the field with field staff evaluating and coaching.

Willingness and ability to travel extensively i.e. 50-75% of the time.

Willingness to be on call (24/7) to respond to & assist with injury and/or environmental emergencies.

Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Required Experience

Education/Equivalent:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety, environmental engineering, or equivalent
Certified Safety Engineer (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent preferred.

Work Experience Needed:

5-7 years of related experience in EHS practice

Work experience in water and wastewater industry, public utility, construction, or de-centralized industry.

NPDES and Safe Drinking Water Act Compliance.
