There are some questions relating to this course that need answers?

  1. Is the IOSH Managing Safely course just a waste of time and resources as it hasn’t been considered as part of most job requirement?
  2. Who really needs this course?
  3. At what career level is it needed?
  4. How valuable is the certificate to employers
  5. Does it lead to a professional upgrade after it has been acquired?
  6. Which category does IOSH managing safely course belong to
  7. If am not yet employed, do I need this course?
  8. Would you advice someone to enroll for the course?

Going back to the first question – Is IOSH Managing Safely course just waste of time and resources as it hasn’t been considered as part of most job requirement?

Within my years of professional experience, I have not come across where IOSH Managing safely certification has been stipulated as part of a job requirement; if there is any, please I will love to see it.

Considering the fact that most professionals generally consider professional courses to boost their professional curriculum vitae to gain better and high employment status; how does this course help them meet their goal in the literal term?

Can I say that to this set of persons, the IOSH Managing Safely course is a waste of time and resources to them?

Do not get me wrong, I am not playing down on the importance of the course, I am trying to drive home a point.

To this set of people, they need courses that are direct requirement for their job of interest. Like NEBOSH Courses, ISO courses, etc.

This takes us to the second question – Who really needs this course?

The problem most Health and Safety professionals (Especially upcoming professionals) have is that they enroll for courses haphazardly with no clear direction. I am also aware that most upcoming HSE professionals unfortunately fall into the hands of wrong coaches and mentors, thereby misguiding them.

It is important that you know what a course is all about, then relate it to your focus. This will help you take informed decisions. There are lots of very important courses that can add to you professional knowledge base; but you should know when you need them. You can not enroll for all courses because they are very invaluable as all requires money, except you have all the money to spend which am sure you do not.

This is what IOSH have to say about who needs the Managing Safely course:

Who Managing Safely is for

Anyone and everyone in a working role who wants to learn the basics of safety and health.

IOSH says anyone or everyone in a working role who wants to learn the basics of safety and health. So if I am in a working role, but do not want to learn the basics of health and safety; I do not need the course.

However, as health and Safety become an integral part of every business, everyone in every industry needs it. Here are some of the benefits that accompanies the course:

  • Provides the knowledge and tools required to work safely
  • It is internationally recognized and is also respected certification.
  • It provides efficient and effective learning of health, safety and environmental basics and is covered in a single programme.

SO who needs the course – “Every one”. Note that the everyone is in parentheses; there is a clause attached.

I will answer questions 3-6 together:

  • At what career stage is it needed?
  • How valuable is the certificate to employers
  • Does it lead to a professional upgrade after it has been acquired?
  • Which category does IOSH managing safely course belong to

The course is important for both beginners and experienced professional as it:

  • Ensures you can assess and control risks and hazards
  • Ensures you understand your own responsibilities for safety and health
  • Enables you to investigate incidents
  • Empowers you to measure your own performance
  • Allows for personal reflections on good practice

If you will agree with me, you need these skills as a Health and Safety professional.

The IOSH Managing safely course is a course packaged by IOSH which aims at developing you into a better professional with these vital skills as highlighted above.

Inasmuch as the course equips delegates to discharge their duties better, unfortunately most employers do not deem it fit to upgrade the employee even when he sees the value the delegate brings to bare.

Although, the course adds so much value to the delegate, but being upgraded by an employer is based on the employers discretion and consideration as there is no standing order that proposes upgrade after the training.

In my advise, when you enroll for the course, keep it in mind that it is for your personal development.

Let me react the the 7&8 question as I summarize.

The IOSH Managing Safely course is for everyone in any profession who is actively working or aspiring to get into a working environment. This is because everyone in all works of life need basic health and safety knowledge.

Considering the benefit of the training, everyone needs it, but you have to prioritize. This is why I used parentheses in the everyone above.

Let me give you some case scenarios:

1st scenario;

I am an unemployed HSE personnel and my highest HSE certification is HSE Level 3. I will be dumb if I source for funds and enroll for IOSH Managing Safely, instead of going for NEBOSH IGC.

2nd case scenario;

I am working as a clerical officer in an establishment but lack basic computer skills. Instead of enrolling for an ICT training relating to my job, I enrolled for the managing safely course. The course as that stage will be useless, a waste of time and resources to me.

3rd case scenario;

I have just been appointed as a confine space assessor in my company but with limited knowledge about confine space. It will be more practical to enroll for a course on how to assess a confine space than enroll for the managing safely course.

4th case scenario;

I have just been appointed as a Health and Safety supervisor in my company; in order to dispose on my duty appropriately I enroll for IOSH Managing Safely Course; that is a GREAT MOVE. Well timed and targeted

In summary, though IOSH certification can give you assess to IOSH membership like the Associate membership cadre, I am of the school of thought that the IOSH Managing Safely course is better enrolled for when you are already in a practicing role where it will have direct impact on your job. Do not just enroll because other professionals hype the course; and you feel you should also enroll for it. Timing is key.

As it is widely said, no knowledge acquired is a waste. I am a believer of this school of thought, but you have to prioritize.

WHEN THE COURSE IS NOT WELL TARGETED AND TIMELY YOU RENDER IT USELESS AT THAT TIME.

Any course no matter how great it is can be useless, a waste of time and resources at any point it is poorly timed and when it is not targeted.
