The goal of a Health and Safety Coordinator is to work with line management to foster safe work environments which are conducive of a functioning Internal Responsibility System. Meaning, Branch Management is responsible to ensure there is a safe work environment and compliance with internal and external expectations is met.
Consult and provide guidance to employees to work towards compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, guidelines, and standards.
Consult and provide guidance to employees to work towards compliance with Wolseley’s internal health, safety and transportation expectations.
Provide training as required to help employees understand compliance expectations.
Physically visit branches to inspect and determine compliance expectations are being met when required.
Use alternative means of communication such as conference calls, webinars, pictures and video, to communicate with branches when required.
Review and/or audit documentation required by branches to ensure the documentation meets expectations.
Work with governing bodies to assist with inspections and investigations as required
Provide information requested when appropriate.
Work with the branches to comply with any recommendations or orders that may arise from inspections and investigations.
Participate in audits when necessary
Participate in accident investigation by assisting Branch Management with determining root causes and appropriate controls for prevention purposes.
Participate in workplace violence investigations when necessary.
Provide professional advice on appropriate solutions or corrective actions where instances of workplace violence occur.
Provide guidance and accountability measures to branches to ensure compliance with health, safety and transportation training expectations.
Assist the branch management to ensure JHSCs are established and functioning as required.
Coach the JHSC on the roles and responsibilities.
Participate in JHSC meetings from time to time to observe and provide guidance on the function.
Provide guidance and direction to JHSC when approached with questions.
Work with the management to ensure that health, safety and transportation expectations are initiated in a timely manner
Formally audit branches within Region at a minimum at least once per year.
Distribute health, safety and transportation bulletins to the branches on a monthly basis.
Distribute and communicate updated health and safety procedures and program requirements in an effective format.
Complete Risk Assessments and Job Hazard Analysis when required.
Gather and collect data to develop accident rates applicable to regions and present to management as required.
Provide branch management with the necessary training and guidance required to assist with Worker’s Compensation claims.
Work on special projects as they arise to help with the development of certain aspects of the health and safety program.
Post Secondary education in Health & Safety, Business or related field;
A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years work experience in a similar role
Must be able to travel to various sites and branches – mostly day travel, but some overnight.
General knowledge of health & safety, WSIB, and training.
Working knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point);
Must be able to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization;
Strong analytic, problem solving and judgment skills;
Excellent oral and written skills, strong communication skills.
Highly organized in prioritizing work, multi-tasking, and consistently meeting deadlines with composure within a fast paced work environment;
Extreme attention to detail;
Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision, in a collaborative team based environment;
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
