Vacancy: HSE Supervisor / HSE Engineer Job in Nigeria

A foremost Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (E&P) Company operating within Nigeria’s energy sector is urgently seeking highly experienced, competent, and safety-driven professionals to fill the position of HSE Supervisor / HSE Engineer at its Gas Processing Plant operations in Akwa Ibom State.

This opportunity is best suited for seasoned HSE professionals with a strong mechanical construction background, extensive hands-on experience in oil & gas projects, and a proven track record of implementing and enforcing international HSE standards in complex, high-risk environments such as gas processing plants, LNG facilities, and hydrocarbon projects.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • HND or Bachelor’s Degree (B.Eng.) in Engineering
    (Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum, or related Engineering discipline preferred)

  • Specialization in Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) or possession of:

    • NEBOSH IGC / NEBOSH Diploma, or

    • Any other internationally recognized HSE certification (equivalent qualifications accepted)

  • Additional certifications, such as ISO 45001/14001 Lead Implementer or Audito,r will be a strong advantage

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years and up to 18 years of hands-on experience in a similar HSE supervisory or engineering role

  • Proven experience within the Oil & Gas industry, particularly:

    • Gas processing plants

    • LNG facilities

    • Hydrocarbon construction and commissioning projects

  • Strong background in Mechanical Engineering construction activities, including:

    • Piping works

    • Pressure systems

    • Heavy lifting operations

    • Rotating and static equipment installation

  • Prior experience working with EPC contractors, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary project teams

Core Skills and Technical Competencies

The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong technical knowledge, leadership capability, and practical HSE execution skills, including but not limited to:

1. Knowledge of International HSE Standards

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)

    • NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

    • OISD

    • API Standards

    • ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems)

    • ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems)

2. Hazard Identification and Risk Management

  • Proficiency in:

    • HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study)

    • HAZID (Hazard Identification)

    • Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

    • Risk Assessment & Control Implementation

  • Ability to proactively identify unsafe acts and unsafe conditions before incidents occur

3. Incident Investigation and Reporting

  • Hands-on experience with incident investigation tools such as:

    • Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

    • 5-Why Analysis

    • Bow-Tie Analysis

  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, and actionable incident reports with corrective and preventive actions

4. Permit to Work and High-Risk Activities

  • Strong knowledge and supervision of:

    • Permit to Work (PTW) systems

    • Confined Space Entry

    • Working at Height

    • Lifting and Rigging Operations

    • Hot Work and Cold Work Controls

    • Hazardous Area Classification & Safety

Key Responsibilities and Job Description

The HSE Supervisor / Engineer will be responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and enforcing all Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements at the gas processing plant site.

Core Duties Include:

1. HSE Policy Implementation

  • Implement and enforce company HSE policies, procedures, and statutory regulations

  • Ensure full compliance with Nigerian regulatory requirements and international best practices

  • Support the development and continuous improvement of site-specific HSE plans

2. Site Safety Supervision

  • Monitor day-to-day construction and operational activities at the gas processing plant

  • Ensure all activities comply with:

    • Approved HSE plans

    • Safe work practices

    • Permit to Work (PTW) systems

  • Stop unsafe work and recommend corrective actions when required

3. Training and Awareness

  • Conduct:

    • Safety induction programs for new employees and contractors

    • Daily and weekly Toolbox Talks

    • Specialized HSE training sessions based on site risk profiles

  • Promote a strong safety culture across all levels of the workforce

4. Hazard Identification and Risk Control

  • Identify potential hazards associated with construction and operational activities

  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend appropriate control measures

  • Ensure implementation and follow-up of corrective and preventive actions

5. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Supervise:

    • Emergency preparedness plans

    • Fire prevention systems

    • Fire drills and evacuation exercises

    • First aid arrangements and medical response readiness

  • Coordinate emergency response activities during drills or actual incidents

6. Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports

  • Maintain accurate records of:

    • Incidents and near misses

    • Training activities

    • Inspections and audits

  • Participate in internal and external HSE audits

Leadership and Behavioral Expectations

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Ability to influence both management and site workers on HSE matters

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability

  • Capability to work under pressure in a high-risk, fast-paced environment

  • Excellent teamwork and coordination skills
