About the Role

We are currently seeking a highly experienced and proactive Senior HSE Officer to join our organization in Ondo State. This role is critical to ensuring a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace across all operations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and programs that align with statutory regulations, international standards, and organizational objectives. You will play a strategic role in preventing workplace incidents, reducing operational risks, ensuring environmental compliance, and fostering a strong culture of safety and sustainability across the organization.

This position is ideal for an HSE professional who combines strong technical knowledge with leadership skills, practical field experience, and the ability to influence safety behavior at all levels of the organization.

Job Purpose

The primary purpose of the Senior HSE Officer role is to lead and manage all Health, Safety, and Environmental initiatives within the organization. This includes ensuring full compliance with applicable laws and standards, preventing occupational injuries and illnesses, minimizing environmental impact, and promoting continuous improvement in HSE performance.

You will act as a key advisor to management, providing expert guidance on HSE risks, mitigation strategies, and best practices, while ensuring that safety and environmental responsibility are fully integrated into daily operations.

Key Job Responsibilities

As a Senior HSE Officer, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. HSE Policy Development and Implementation

  • Develop, review, and implement comprehensive HSE policies, procedures, and programs in line with regulatory requirements and international best practices.

  • Ensure HSE systems are aligned with recognized standards such as ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems).

  • Continuously evaluate and improve HSE frameworks to support organizational growth and operational changes.

2. Compliance and Regulatory Management

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal HSE laws and regulations.

  • Monitor regulatory updates and ensure timely implementation of new or revised requirements.

  • Liaise with regulatory authorities, auditors, and external stakeholders during inspections and compliance assessments.

3. Risk Assessment and Hazard Management

  • Conduct regular risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHA), and safety inspections across all operational areas.

  • Identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures to eliminate or reduce exposure.

  • Ensure safe work procedures are developed, communicated, and strictly enforced.

4. Incident Investigation and Reporting

  • Lead and coordinate investigations of accidents, incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions.

  • Identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive action plans.

  • Prepare detailed incident investigation reports and track the implementation of corrective actions to closure.

5. Training, Awareness, and Capacity Building

  • Plan and deliver regular HSE training, toolbox talks, and awareness programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.

  • Ensure all staff are adequately trained on safety procedures, emergency response, and environmental responsibilities.

  • Promote behavioral safety initiatives that encourage proactive hazard reporting and safe work practices.

6. Environmental Management and Sustainability

  • Monitor environmental aspects and impacts of organizational activities.

  • Implement environmental protection measures and sustainable practices to reduce waste, emissions, and resource consumption.

  • Ensure proper waste management, pollution control, and environmental incident response procedures are in place.

7. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans covering fire, medical emergencies, environmental spills, and other potential incidents.

  • Coordinate and conduct regular emergency drills and simulations to test preparedness and response effectiveness.

  • Ensure availability and maintenance of emergency equipment, fire protection systems, and first aid facilities.

8. Documentation, Reporting, and Data Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date HSE records, registers, permits, and reports.

  • Track and analyze HSE performance indicators, trends, and statistics.

  • Prepare regular HSE performance reports for management review and decision-making.

9. Leadership and Safety Culture Promotion

  • Serve as a role model and advocate for health, safety, and environmental excellence.

  • Promote a strong safety culture where employees take ownership of their safety and that of others.

  • Work closely with management and operational teams to embed HSE considerations into all business activities.

Functional Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of HSE management systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001).

  • Proven expertise in risk assessment, hazard identification, and incident investigation.

  • Experience in safety audits, inspections, and environmental compliance monitoring.

  • Solid understanding of emergency response planning and implementation.

  • Ability to design and deliver effective HSE training and awareness programs.

  • Strong data collection, reporting, and performance monitoring skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant statutory and regulatory HSE requirements in Nigeria.

Academic and Professional Requirements

Educational Qualification

Candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following disciplines or related fields:

  • Occupational Health & Safety

  • Environmental Science / Environmental Management

  • Industrial Safety

  • Engineering (with HSE focus)

  • Any other relevant HSE-related discipline

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 4–5 years of relevant HSE experience.

  • At least 2–3 years in a senior or supervisory HSE role.

  • Prior experience in industrial, plantation, manufacturing, or large-scale operational environments will be a strong advantage.

Professional Certifications and Training

Candidates with the following certifications or training will be highly preferred:

  • NEBOSH, Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent HSE certification

  • Training in ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems

  • Valid certifications in First Aid, Fire Safety, and Emergency Response
