Accountabilities: As part of a team, the successful candidate will work with Nova Scotia Power management, employees, and our Contractors to support and strengthen our safety culture and ensure compliance to our safety program and work practices.
The successful candidate is responsible to work with Contractors who supply services to Regional Operations and apply the appropriate measure of direction and support to ensure compliance with Nova Scotia Power’s Contractor Safety Program.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Work with Regional Operations Contract Managers and Site Representatives to ensure all are aware, knowledgeable, and held accountable to follow the Contractor Safety Program.
Ensure all Regional Operations Tier I (High Risk) Contractors are registered on ISN
Report all Regional Operations Contractor Incidents.
Person-hours, lost time, medical aid, restricted work, first aid, high potentials, proactives.
Provide analysis on trends we are experiencing and proper corrective actions to address these trends.
Ensure JOHSC investigations are completed for all serious incidents.
Support major outages and significant events in the business.
Be a 24-Hour Safety Champion and bring our safety culture home with you.
Ensure Safety Department has a visible field presence
Provide onsite guidance and presence on work sites around the province where Contractors are completing work scope under contract with NS Power.
Complete field audit reports and observations.
Assist with the completion of Contractor Assessments and Evaluations utilizing standard reporting and criteria developed by Nova Scotia Power.
Act as a Liaison with regulatory agencies, including onsite with officers from Labour and Advanced Education.
Support compliance of your assigned operating area with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing and observation.
Provide coaching & counseling on safety related issues.
Assist Managers, Supervisors and frontline employees understand and apply interpretations of safety regulations, policies & rules.
Provide safety related education such as Scaffolding Awareness training.
Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent message is delivered.
Work with other utilities and industries to improve safety in the workplace.
Travel across the province is a requirement of the position.
You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
Skills, Capabilities and Experience: As the ideal candidate you have a demonstrated a passion for safety and experience working with world class safety programs. The ideal candidate has at least three years of experience in safety role. You also have several years’ experience in a trade or operational role where safety was a priority. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in generation, transmission, distribution and or communication industries. A CRSP designation and familiarity with the Nova Scotia Health and Safety Act and Regulations would be considered assets.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.
