NEBOSH Diploma meets the academic requirement for Graduate IOSH membership and is intended for those pursuing a career as professional health and safety advisors. It is aimed at health and safety professionals who want to advance their career or progress to further study as a postgraduate. It is highly sought-after by employers from a range of industries.

Inasmuch as NEBOSH Diploma level is comparable to an Honours Degree. However, it is a vocational qualification and cannot be referred to as a degree. Only institutions with degree-awarding powers, for example, universities, can offer degrees.

What Level Are NEBOSH Diploma Qualifications?

The following NEBOSH Diploma qualifications are rated at Level 10 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF):

  • National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • National Diploma in Environmental Management
  • International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • International Diploma in Environmental Management

What Level Are NEBOSH Award Qualifications?

The following NEBOSH Award qualification is rated at Level 5 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), from 1 January 2012:

SCQF Level 5 is comparable to NQF/QCF Level 2 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or GCSE standard.

What Level Are NEBOSH Certificate Qualifications?

The following NEBOSH Certificate qualifications are rated at Level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF):

  • National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • National Certificate in Environmental Management
  • National Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-Being at Work
  • International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management

The following NEBOSH qualifications are expected to be rated at Level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) we are undergoing the approval process:

  • NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction UK
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction International

International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is being withdrawn

The International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is being withdrawn. In April 2021 we launched the International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals as a replacement.

Existing learners will have five years to complete their qualification. The final assessment dates for the November 2015 specifications will be:

Unit IA/IB/IC: July 2026
Unit DNI: May 2026

These dates may be brought forward if the accreditation and certification end dates are adjusted once SQA have approved the applications for the new Diplomas.

Entry Requirements

There are no mandatory qualification entry requirements but it is strongly recommended learners have undertaken the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. The syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning.

It is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. NEBOSH recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher in IELTS tests.
