The roles:-

The two posts will report into The Head of Heath & Safety and are both currently 18month fixed term contracts (FTC) and ideally, we would be looking for professionals who have an appreciation of health and safety issues within the water industry (preferred) otherwise from within the utility and/or engineering arena. Site inspection experience, along with an understanding of re-instatement work, street works, excavation, audits and working alongside contractor partners would be a real advantage.

Within the role, your key accountabilities will be, but not limited to:-

Monitoring and reviewing the Company’s Health & Safety risk control, specifically risk assessments and safe systems of work, and recommending and supporting implementation of improvements as appropriate;

Providing specialist advice (either directly or from external sources) on Health & Safety matters on request,

Recommend methods and safe systems of work that will minimise the risk of an incident that may result in an accident or injury to Bristol Water Staff, Contractors and/or the public and incorporate them in the Company’s standard working procedures.

Update and maintain protective clothing standards including respiratory protective equipment as required.

Ensure that legislation related to the control of substances hazardous to health is complied with and adhered to including the management of a COSHH assessment database, ensuring that asbestos management surveys are completed and kept up to date.

Monitor new and amended legislation and analyse its effect on the Company business, incorporating new materials, techniques and other developments in the field of health and safety to train, inform and instruct Company personnel as required.

Audit and Review new contractor’s Health & Safety documentation as part of the corporate on-boarding process to ensure any contractors put forward for pre-qualification meet a good standard.

Inspections and audits of appointed contractors are to be carried out on a regular basis ensuring formal reports including any issues are passed to the Head of Health & Safety and the relevant Line Management Teams.

Advising managers of trends and developments in Health & Safety management and recommending changes and improvements to meet statutory requirements and appropriate best practice;

Maintaining the Company arrangements for accident reporting and investigation and, in particular, reporting notifiable accidents to the HSE;

Investigating accidents to identify underlying causes and to recommend corrective action;
Working/supporting both union and employee safety reps.

Working with our contract partners with regards to reporting of H&S issues.

Alongside the above, you will be able to demonstrable a proactive approach to Health & Safety and well-developed stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.

What we are looking for in you:-

Significant Health & Safety experience
Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with difficult people.

Ability to successfully work under pressure.
Self reliant, dependable, reliable, resourceful and conscientious.

Able to write professional reports eg. to management and regulatory bodies
Readiness to work unsocial hours for operational emergencies.


Valid driving licence

Literate, numerate and detail conscious.

Computer literate and good working knowledge of spreadsheets, databases and corporate systems.

Able to pass a breathing apparatus medical & wear compressed air breathing apparatus in stressful environments.

Able to work at heights, depths and in confined spaces without phobia or duress.
