Our Safety and Security Division, Security Operational Support is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Specialist to provide direction and carry out a variety of technical assignments such as Fire Code Audits, surveys, analysis of Fire Safety and Evacuation Plans and procedures relating to fire prevention and life safety within Metrolinx.
Researching, developing, reviewing annually and general maintenance of the corporate Fire Life Safety Plan and or evacuation plans for each Metrolinx facility owned or leased.
Coordinate the responsibilities and training of all Metrolinx Fire Wardens and designated personnel under the plan(s).
Conducting oversight audits of all Metrolinx Facilities to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC), Ontario Fire Code (OFC), National Fire Code of Canada (NFC), Propane Code, Canadian Standards Association (CSA), National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA), Ontario Electrical Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
Review and provide guidance to existing emergency response agency emergency plans and procedures.
Provide interpretation of numerous codes and standards to management and staff
Knowledgeable on emergency evacuation considerations for employees, visitors, customers, and persons with accessibility issues from buildings, stations, track level and vehicles.
Maintains databases relating to plans, procedures, recommendations, fire investigations and training.
Knowledgeable on the safe storage and handling practices for flammable liquids and gases.
Peer review of design drawings and specifications for new facilities and major renovations to ensure that fire prevention and protection concerns are addressed.
Establish working relationships with municipal fire services as required.
Establish key performance metrics for compliance and training.
Generate comprehensive reports to management as required in support of overall corporate safety initiatives
– Works with client Metrolinx managers and staff in order to:
– Consult with client groups to review plans and processes and identify specific needs.
– Conduct surveys of managers/supervisors to obtain feedback and data that provides information as to the effectiveness of training being provided to the staff, and on any improvements to the training proposed by the managers/supervisors
– Work with client groups to ensure plan submission and compliance of the corporate life safety plan are implemented.
– Provide Peer review and considerations for Fire Plan or emergency evacuation processes maximizing safety in accordance with relevant legislation and best practices.
– Regular contact with the senior supervisor and manager – Operational Support and maintains a close working relationship with staff, supervisory and management personnel in other client groups.
Showcases and explains to client managers the need of supporting and participating in training programs by stressing to their staff the importance of such programs, and of the significance of ensuring that they meet the corporate, legal, and regulatory requirements for such training
Encourages client managers to provide advance notice of any upcoming business concerns or relevant changes in their workplace operations, in order that the respective manager, Senior Supervisor and the Fire Life Safety Specialist can hold early consultations regarding any probable impact on existing plans and processes and make the necessary recommendations for corrective actions.
Keeps abreast of technical and legislative changes and developments as they apply to the fire and life safety program.
Assists the Senior Supervisor & Manager in calculating the budget estimates for the development and the delivery of training programs associated with Fire prevention and life safety processes.
Provides guidance to various project teams and external stakeholders regarding the development and delivery of fire prevention and life safety plans and processes.
Provides Peer review and recommendations for improvements in relation to regulatory and industry best practices.
A minimum of a three-year college diploma in Fire Prevention Technology, or a degree in Fire Protection Engineering (or equivalent) is preferred.
A minimum of five (5) years working directly in the fire prevention / protection industry is required
Professional credentials such as Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA), or Canadian Association of Fire Investigators (CCFI), or National Fire Protection Association (CFPS) is an asset. Certification in adult learning program is an asset.
Requires sound technical knowledge of fire prevention and fire protection principles
Ability to interpret legislation and relevant codes.
Occasional work in inclement weather / evenings and at remote locations to facilitate delivery of training programs, inspections, audits, etc.
