The Role:


The Field Health and Safety Specialist represents the office of the Sr. Director of Safety when interacting with internal employees at all levels as well as Federal and Provincial regulators.  The Field Health Safety group is responsible for providing daily health and safety coaching and guidance to all Multimodal functions, implementing programs to improve H&S performance, implementing H&S compliance programs and to serve as H&S resource/ subject matter expert to Operations functions, all within their area of responsibility.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Implement and monitor the effectiveness of safety programs under direction of Regional/ Functional Manager
  • Conduct safety training as needed and initiate safety improvement programs
  • Provide expertise and support to Leadership in development and implementation of annual and longer term H&S improvement plans
  • Lead/participate/coach incident root cause analysis as needed
  • Implement corrective/preventative actions as needed & follow up (monitor/evaluation)
  • Conduct job hazard analysis, risk assessments as needed
  • Provide input into corporate/functional safe work practices (policies, rules, etc.)
  • Under the direction of their Senior Manager, serve as interface with Regulator for items with Local impact; escalate items to Manager for review/escalation as needed
  • Implement and monitor H&S compliance processes and activities, initiate improvements as necessary
  • Conduct repetitive compliance tasks as directed (i.e. process around quarterly inspections, etc.)
  • Provide input to corporate SME’s with respect to regulatory applicability
  • Lead/participate/coach H&S committees as needed and Intervene when H&S committee is not effective
  • Implement, monitor and respond to IH programs under the technical direction and support of the corporate IH staff
  • Fill Safety Officer role within ICS Command staff structure as needed
  • Work with Emergency Response group to develop/implement/test emergency response plans
  • Identify and initiate improvement opportunities via analysis of performance data
  • Provide reports of KPI’s to drive performance improvement
  • QA/QC of SAP data/ report entries
  • Participate in field EH&S audits upon request and provide input on improvement opportunities
  • Implement corrective actions identified in audits


Required Technical skills:

  • Principles of Industrial Safety
  • Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene
  • Root cause investigation methodologies
  • Job safety analysis / risk assessment techniques
  • Basic knowledge of H&S Regulatory requirements
  • Auditing skills and Analytical capabilities
  • Rail safety and ICS
  • MS Office

Required Business skills:

  • Public speaking, strong oral/written Bi-lingual communication skills
  • Conflict resolution and mediation along with negotiation and intervention skills
  • Drive for continuous improvement and initiative
  • Strong leadership/coaching ability for the influence on all levels

Education / Certification / Experience:

  • Industrial Safety background
  • 5 years railroad operations/multimodal experience or relevant industrial safety experience
  • Degree/Certificate in H&S or progressing toward
  • H&S Certification or progressing toward (CSP)
