Role Summary:
To provide a professional and technically competent DCS/Control engineering function. Acting as system custodian for the site process control and associated systems and ensuring the safe selection, operation, maintenance and change management of all control and DCS systems on site, proactively investigating ways to improve production and safety through exploitation of DCS capability.
To support the E/I and project functions in the maintenance and implementation of improvement projects on the Kirkby site.
Essential Responsibilities: 
  • System custodian for the site control systems, including setting procedures for the testing, maintaining and modification of existing systems
  • Analysing data and presenting findings in written reports
  • Manage the DCS Life Cycle Support Contract
  • Develop improvement & replacement projects from concept through lifecycle to complete implementation & delivery; to be lead engineer on DCS/PLC biased projects
  • To proactively investigate and plan continuous improvements for production, safety and obsolescence aspects
  • Assist with specifications for the procurement of capital equipment for onsite projects
  • Support site engineering and production staff with technical advice, application engineering, incident investigation and scope definition
  • Actively participate in the initiative for onsite compliance with EEMUA 191 alarm management requirements
  • Presentation of work, reports and recommendations to senior site management
  • Trouble shooting and problem solving of control system faults
  • Support the site E/I engineering in that function when required
  • Attend specified training for the continued integrity and improvement of site control system
  • Carry out minor SCADA and system configuration changes as required
  • Writing of URS/FDS for changes to system software and control on major MOC’s and projects
  • Liaising with contract resource for the modification of site systems to ensure proper management of change is maintained and commensurate specification and testing is performed
  • To set up site training facility for the Siemens PCS7
  • Attend HSE intervention visits as required.
  • Participate in project safety lifecycle – PHA, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL etc.
  • Special projects and ad-hoc duties as assigned
  • Degree qualified
  • Chartered or working to towards Chartered Engineer status
  • Experience of working in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • DCS system such as Siemens PCS7, including basic configuration and fault finding
  • Experience in the requirements of implementation of IEC 61508/11 for the management of safety instrumented systems
  • Time served E/I apprenticeship preferred.
  • Experience of working on a high hazard COMAH/regulated manufacturing site would be beneficial
  • Experience in configuration of recipe driven/batch plant control systems (BPCS)
  • Experience of facilitating/supervising a team would be beneficial.
  • Experience of a Management of Change system & managing installation projects.
  • Requirements of a high integrity management of change (MoC) system
  • Requirements gathering, design, configuration, integration and implementation of process control solutions
  • The basic system topology of the Siemens PCS7 and understanding of its component parts
  • Knowledge of BSEN 61508/11. Functional safety management.
  • Understanding of the project lifecycle and implementation stages
  • Knowledge of process development and improvement techniques.
  • Knowledge of health, safety and environmental compliance requirements COMAH awareness (Control of Major Accident Hazards).
  • DSEAR regulations and impact on DCS & SIS functionality
  • Knowledge of PLC and SCADA functions
  • Analytical skills and ability to understand and apply diverse information from multi discipline functions
  • Ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines
