Mr Nsikak Ekam, The President, Nigeria Chapter of the American Society for Safety Professionals (ASSP), has urged traders on the need to learn basic firefighting;he made this call in Abuja on Monday. This he said will help reduce losses from fire outbreaks in markets.
According to the ASSP Boss, this was very important considering the recent spike in market fire incidents across the country.
However, Ekam explained that since prevention is better than cure, they must take safety measures seriously and adhere to safety rules towards a safer society. He described the recent fire incident in Balogun market in Lagos as a “regrettable disaster”.
“Preliminary investigation into the Lagos Fire Service and Emergency Response Council showed that the fire started from a trader trying to refill a generator.
The President, however, explained that if proactive measures are properly adopted, it could save lives and properties in the country. He also advised the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify enlightenment on hazards associated with the harmattan period across communities.
Finally, he advised the Federal Government to put in place adequate policies that would address safety challenges among Nigerians and help prevent domestic accidents.
